The group was initially set up by Mr Clarkson – who was at the final in London – to lead an advertising campaign for his beer and cider brand which is sold at his pub and many others.

The creation of the brand – which is named after a site near to his 1,000-acre Diddly Squat Farm near Chadlington – was chronicled on hit Amazon Prime series Clarkson’s Farm, the fifth season of which is coming out on June 3.

Entirely made out of people connected with farming, the choir then entered the latest series of Britain’s Got Talent making it all the way to the final, which they then won.

After their win was announced, one of the choir’s members, Katryna Shell, told presenters Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly: “We are the first-ever choir to have won Britain’s Got Talent.

“This is for all the farmers out there, for anybody that’s struggling, it’s not a taboo subject, if you’re not OK, speak up, this is for the farmers.”

There were jubilant scenes at Mr Clarkson’s pub The Farmer’s Dog and the former Top Gear host was in tears during the final.

In a post on judge Simon Cowell’s Instagram, Clarkson told him: “That was incredible wasn’t it? I was genuinely nervous.

“The girl on the door said, ‘oh I’m not sure they’re going to win’, the odds were drifting, and I thought, no.

“These guys worked so hard, it’s the best thing ever Simon, thank you for having them.”

However not everyone was so happy with some on social media expressing anger.

Cuz said: “Oh the Tory farmer choir won? Put BGT out of its misery please, the show is done.”

Yousaf said: “The state of this country allowing a choir full of Clarkson’s farmers win Britain’s Got Talent.”
He added: “This might be the death nail for BGT.”

Mark Peel referenced Mr Clarkson’s past including his punching of a producer on Top Gear and accusing him of only buying a farm to avoid paying tax.

He said: “And still ITV let him appear on Britain’s Got Talent to rig the vote for grifting farmers – what a joke.”

However, many others congratulated the Hawkstone Farmers Choir – which includes several Oxfordshire members – and applauded the way they were raising awareness about farming and mental health.
