Jeremy Clarkson Thought His Career Was Over — Then Clarkson’s Farm Changed Everything

Jeremy Clarkson Thought His Career Was “Done” Before Clarkson’s Farm Became a Hit

Jeremy Clarkson may now be the unlikely face of modern farming, but according to his longtime producer Andy Wilman, the TV star genuinely believed his best days were behind him before Clarkson’s Farm became an international sensation on Prime Video.

A Series That Captured Audiences From Day One

Since its debut in 2021, Clarkson’s Farm has fascinated viewers with Clarkson’s unpredictable journey through the realities of running Diddly Squat Farm. Fans have tuned in for four years to watch him battle weather, regulations, machinery breakdowns, and his own instincts — often with comedic results.

The series also owes much of its charm to its supporting cast:
Kaleb Cooper, Charlie Ireland, Gerald Cooper, Harriet Cowan, and Lisa Hogan.
All quickly became breakout personalities beloved by audiences worldwide.

Andy Wilman: “Jeremy Never Thought He’d Have Another Hit”

Speaking on The Chris Moyles Show on Radio X, producer Andy Wilman admitted that Clarkson’s Farm was never expected to succeed — especially not by Clarkson himself.

“That was absolutely out of the blue,” Wilman shared.
“Jeremy never thought he was going to have another hit… we were done.”

Following Clarkson’s departure from the BBC’s Top Gear, the team had a contractual obligation with Amazon to produce more content alongside The Grand Tour. This pushed Clarkson to pitch individual projects — including the idea of documenting life on his farm.

Executives Tried to Stop the Farming Show From Happening

Wilman revealed that Amazon executives weren’t eager about the concept.

“If I had a quid for every exec who rang me and went, ‘Can you talk him out of that?’” he joked.

Clarkson himself had similar fears.
Both he and Wilman worried the show might be “the most boring thing” they’d ever attempted.

A Cast No One Saw Coming

Despite the doubts, the show worked — largely because of the unexpected chemistry between Clarkson and his team. Kaleb’s stubborn charm, Charlie’s precision, Gerald’s indistinguishable dialogue, and Lisa’s calm presence gave the series a natural authenticity that resonated with viewers.

“We didn’t see that cast coming,” Wilman admitted.

Their dynamic turned a simple farming documentary into one of Prime Video’s most-watched unscripted series.

Kaleb Cooper’s Stardom: From Local Farmhand to Global Name

The show’s success has propelled young farmer Kaleb Cooper into the spotlight. He is now filming his own four-part Prime Video series in Australia.

Kaleb shared his excitement about the new project:
“I spend most of my time with the most travelled man in the world, so I got brave and booked my first ever flight… Australia, here I come!”

The new series will follow him as he attempts to take his farming contracting business international — swapping Chipping Norton for the Australian Outback.

A Surprise Success Story No One Predicted

What began as a project Clarkson believed might bore audiences has become one of the most successful and influential farming shows ever produced. It revived interest in agriculture, introduced viewers to the realities of rural life, and turned the entire Diddly Squat crew into household names.

Clarkson may have thought he was “done,” but Clarkson’s Farm proved there was another hit waiting — in the most unlikely place.
