Jeremy Clarkson Rushed to Hospital Days After Criticising the NHS

A Swift Turn of Events

Just days after publishing a scathing column in which he described the National Health Service (NHS) as “unaffordable” and “a creaking old monster,” Jeremy Clarkson found himself in urgent need of medical help. The former Top Gear host revealed that he had to be rushed to hospital for emergency treatment — ironically, just hours after his critique of the health system went to print.

The Painful Procedure

Writing again in The Sunday Times, Clarkson refrained from specifying the exact nature of his medical issue, but he did describe the treatment as “Defcon 1 painful,” joking that “they had to chisel me off the ceiling with a spatula afterwards.”

He admitted that, although he had maintained private health insurance for years, he had grown frustrated with insurers’ frequent attempts to avoid covering certain procedures.

Turning to the NHS

When the emergency struck, Clarkson was two hours away from the nearest private hospital, leaving him with no choice but to seek help at an NHS facility — the very system he had criticised days earlier.

“I had a very hot neck when I realised this,” he quipped. “I wondered if I should maybe tiptoe into the hospital wearing a Piers Morgan face mask.”

Fears of Retaliation

The outspoken presenter admitted he briefly worried that NHS staff might recognise him and take revenge after his recent comments, joking that someone might “urinate in [his] tea” or worse.

However, his fears proved unfounded. Clarkson praised the staff for their kindness and professionalism, remarking that he “couldn’t find anything to moan about at all.”

“It was all spotless,” he wrote. “Lunch was kids’ food — brilliant — and they even made me better, for which I shall be eternally grateful.”

Praise and Perspective

Despite the warm words following his treatment, Clarkson maintained his belief that the NHS, in its current form, is financially unsustainable.

He argued that Chancellor Rachel Reeves would eventually have to raise taxes to keep the health service running:

“She targeted the farmers last time. This time, I wouldn’t be surprised if she went after your children’s pocket money — and of course, she’ll tell us it’s for the NHS.”

Calls for Reform

Clarkson proposed several controversial ideas to reduce strain on the health service — such as banning tanning salons, wood-burning stoves, and even meat consumption. He also suggested that allowing more migrant workers into the UK could help cut wage costs.

In conclusion, he reiterated his central view:

“The NHS is an excellent organisation, and the frontline staff are superb. But in its current state, we as a nation simply cannot afford it.”
