Tony Beets’ Wild Family History | Gold Rush: The Dirt
The Origin of a Legend: Tony Beets’ Journey from Dutch Farmer to Gold Mining Icon
From the Fields of the Netherlands to the Wilderness of the Yukon
Tony Beets is perhaps the most famous farmer ever to come out of the small village of Wijdenes, Netherlands. On a recent trip back to his homeland, Tony visited his family farm, reminiscing about his roots. Despite the nostalgia, he admitted he never truly saw himself as a farmer. “The wisest thing we did,” Tony said, “was pick up our bags, get the hell out, and go to Canada.”
A Leap of Faith with Minnie
At just 23 years old, Tony made the life-changing decision to move to Canada. But he wasn’t alone. His longtime partner, Minnie, insisted she wasn’t going to be left behind. “He thought he was going alone,” she laughed. “I said, ‘No, no, no, that’s not how that works.’” Together, they planned the journey, arriving in British Columbia with just $300 and no English skills.
Early Struggles and New Ambitions
Tony’s first job in Canada was milking cows for $4 an hour in Salmon Arm. But soon he realized he hadn’t escaped the cycle he wanted to leave behind. Then they heard about the Yukon. Just two months later, in March 1981, Tony made the trip north, chasing rumors of good money in gold mining.

His First Break in Dawson City
In Dawson City, Tony landed his first gold mining job with a company called Tamarack. He offered to work for free just to prove himself. Dirt and equipment came naturally to him. For six months straight, he worked 14-hour days with no days off. That relentless work ethic helped him climb the ladder.
Building a Life and a Legacy
With a growing family, Tony knew being just an operator wasn’t enough. He wanted more control, more responsibility, and more opportunity. Slowly, through savings and persistence, he started building toward owning his own operation. Eventually, he bought Tamarack—the very company that gave him his first shot.

The Family That Built It Together
Tony and Minnie worked hard—he in the mines, and she holding down multiple jobs while raising the kids. “We used to live just down the hill,” their kids recalled. “That way, we could see him at the end of the day.” Through sacrifice, they carved out a modest but successful life in the Yukon.
From Miner to TV Star
They never imagined gold mining would lead to stardom. But in Season 2 of Gold Rush, Tony Beets made his first appearance when struggling miner Todd Hoffman sought his advice. That moment changed everything.
The First Gold Rush Appearance
In rare behind-the-scenes footage, Tony and Minnie revisited the first time Tony met Todd. Tony didn’t sugarcoat it: “What are you doing stripping if you don’t know what’s underneath? Drill.” That no-nonsense attitude quickly became his trademark.
The Hoffman Effect and Lasting Legacy
Even after all these years, Tony doesn’t reveal exactly what he thought of Todd Hoffman. But he gives credit where it’s due: “He took chances. You have to give him that. Without him, there wouldn’t have been a Gold Rush. So we’re all good.”
