Mike Beets Strikes Big With Nearly $1 Million in Gold as Tony Struggles to Secure New Ground
Gold Rush: Tony Beets Battles Frozen Ground as Mike Beets Delivers Nearly $1 Million in Gold
In a season defined by unpredictability, Tony Beets and his crew face one of their toughest setbacks yet—while Mike Beets pulls off a massive gold win worth nearly $936,000. Episode footage reveals a dramatic contrast between the two operations, highlighting both the challenges and triumphs unfolding across the Yukon.

A Promising Test Pan Signals New Hope
It all begins with a simple but telling test: a pan of gold-rich pay dirt.
“All it takes is a $2 fan to prove if you can mine or not,” one crew member jokes, examining the glittering colors in the pan.
The results are impressive—15 to 20 bright colors, a strong indicator of a promising new spot. Encouraged, Tony orders his team to begin stripping the cut down to pay dirt and preparing a pad for the wash plant Sluicifer (Slooot).
But this new location is far from the existing sluice boxes, making operations complicated.
“We’re out of pay in this area,” Tony admits. “It sucks that we don’t have any pay to feed the wash plants with.”

Sluicifer Finishes the Comeback Cut—Now It’s Time to Move
After three months of intense work, Sluicifer completes its final run from the Comeback Cut. To stay on schedule at Indian River, Tony plans to haul the giant wash plant to the newly opened Corner Cut—a full mile away.
“We want to have the plant in place and sluicing as soon as possible,” Tony says.
Cousin Mike takes charge of the massive move. The route is narrow, angled toward the creek, and bordered by trees on one side and a steep drop on the other.
“I’ve got to make sure the plant doesn’t slide sideways,” Mike explains. “Once it goes toward the hole on the left, there’s no stopping it.”
Despite the danger, the team slowly and carefully maneuvers Sluicifer through the tightest bend.
“We did it,” Mike says proudly. “I’m happy.”
With the plant safely delivered, Tony needs Mike back in the cut immediately to build up a new pay pile.
A Harsh Reality: The Ground Is Frozen Solid
But the optimism doesn’t last long.
“Oh, that doesn’t feel right,” Mike says moments later. “That’s not good. This is not promising at all. That feels like frost.”
What should have been a straightforward digging job turns into a major setback.
Permafrost—deep, solid, frozen ground—has taken over the entire cut.
“This is going to slow us down,” Mike says.
“It’s going to cost us a lot of time,” Tony admits when he arrives.
They try multiple spots. All of them are frozen.
“We were hoping to get some pay here quick, but that’s not going to happen,” Tony says. “If we don’t find thawed ground, we won’t be doing any sluicing.”
With two sluice plants down, Tony faces losing everything he gained earlier in the season unless the crew can find thawed dirt fast.
Weigh-In Time: Mike Beets Steals the Spotlight
Despite the setbacks on Tony’s side, there is one bright spot for the Beets family: Mike’s trommel on Paradise Hill has been running non-stop—and the results are staggering.
The weigh-in begins with the gold from the smaller run:
75.66 ounces, worth $190,000.
Then comes the big one—Mike’s main jar.
Ounce by ounce, the tally climbs:
10… 50… 100… 200… 300…
Finally, the total lands at:
374.34 ounces of gold
valued at $936,000.
“You’ve got a million bucks on the table, just about,” the crew says as they combine the totals.
Tony, despite his troubles, can’t help but acknowledge the win:
“That’s pretty nice. That’s pretty cool.”
A Tale of Two Cuts: Triumph for Mike, Trouble for Tony
While Tony’s Indian River plans are literally frozen, Mike’s operation is soaring—bringing in nearly one million dollars in gold and stabilizing the family’s season.
But with two plants shut down, frozen ground ahead, and time running out, Tony must rethink his strategy fast.
Gold Rush season 16 continues to show that in the Yukon, fortunes can shift in a single day—and sometimes, the difference between success and shutdown is as small as a frozen patch of dirt.
