The soldier, overcome with fear, reportedly fired his weapon at the figure.

The story did not end there. Sightings of the same figure have continued over the decades, turning the Gaunt Gunner into one of Spike Island’s most enduring legends.

A prison full of shadows and violent history

Inside the prison blocks, the stories become even darker.

One of the most feared locations is A Block, once used to house both soldiers and later hundreds of prisoners during the famine. Reports from this area include shadow figures, faces appearing in windows, and unexplained movement within abandoned corridors.

The building is also tied to the violent death of a prison guard named William Ready, known for his cruelty. According to historical accounts, two prisoners attacked and killed him after enduring harsh treatment. Some believe his presence may still linger within the structure.

Elsewhere, the punishment block stands as one of the most disturbing parts of the island. Prisoners were confined in total darkness for extended periods, often alone in extremely small cells. Today, visitors report hearing footsteps, sensing movement, and seeing figures where no one should be.
