Winter Season Woes: Keith Colburn’s Back Injury Could Derail His Biggest Crab Quota Yet

‘Deadliest Catch’: Captain Keith Colburn Suffers Painful Fall That Could Derail Winter Season

The Bering Sea is back — and so are the storms, rivalries, and dangers that make Deadliest Catch one of Discovery’s most intense series.
The October 10 episode marked the start of the winter opilio (snow crab) season in Dutch Harbor, reopening the lucrative fishery for the first time in three years. With $51 million in potential earnings on the line, the captains had everything to fight for. But for one, the fight turned personal — and painful.

Here's What Happened to Captain Keith Colburn's F/V, the Wizard, on 'Deadliest Catch'

A $51 Million Season Begins

As the fleet geared up for the long-awaited snow crab comeback, the stakes were higher than ever.
Captain Keith Colburn of the F/V Wizard faced a massive 175,000-pound quota, and though he was confident in his crew, early trouble quickly set in.

Keith’s brother Monte Colburn was nowhere to be found in the wheelhouse, forcing deckhand “OJ” Pascual Ganuelas to report that Monte had been drinking heavily and was feeling ill. The revelation left Keith furious. With a winter storm rolling in and valuable time slipping away, he needed all hands on deck.

Storms, Strain, and Family Tension

The storm intensified as the crew struggled to drop pots before conditions worsened. One deckhand suffered a shoulder injury amid the chaos, while Keith worried about his brother’s health and his own family’s history with alcoholism.

Eventually, Monte recovered enough to take the wheel, giving Keith a moment to regroup — but the break didn’t last. Not long after, Monte received word that Keith had slipped and fallen near the fridge, badly injuring his back. His lower side began to turn purple, raising fears of internal bruising near the kidney.

A Captain in Pain — and in Trouble

Isolated far from Dutch Harbor, Monte feared they might need to call for a medevac. Keith tried to downplay the injury, icing his back and refusing to stop operations. But as the storm continued to batter the boat, it became clear that his condition could jeopardize not only the trip — but his entire season.

For the Wizard crew, the injury was another reminder of how unforgiving life on the Bering Sea can be. Every hour lost means thousands of dollars gone, and with the competition heating up, Keith couldn’t afford a setback.

Rick Shelford and Sig Hansen: Tension on the High Seas

Elsewhere, Rick Shelford and Sig Hansen were sizing each other up in a tense game of strategy.
Rick, now captaining the Aleutian Lady, had quietly purchased another vessel — the Bountiful — to double his advantage. During a brief meetup with Sig, the two captains discussed their fishing plans, though neither seemed entirely honest.

Rick sent Sig east while he went west, keeping his best intel to himself. When Sig’s pots came up nearly empty and Rick struck gold with 372 crabs in his first haul, suspicion set in fast.

Sig checked with Rick’s associate Bobby, who confirmed the truth — the better fishing was west.
Rick was sandbagging information,” Sig concluded grimly. “Two can play that game. Let the games begin.

Jake Anderson Bets Big on the Titan Explorer

Meanwhile, Jake Anderson took a massive gamble aboard the Titan Explorer. Trading opilio quota for higher-value bairdi crab, Jake hoped the risk would earn him enough — nearly $1.5 million — to buy his boat outright.

But the storm had other plans. His first pots were light, and mechanical issues soon followed. A burned port solenoid crippled his steering system, forcing Jake to operate with only half control of the vessel.

Despite 20-foot waves and brutal conditions, he refused to back down — guiding his crew through circles on the storm-tossed sea while repairs were made. The move kept them fishing but pushed everyone to their physical limits.

High Stakes and Hard Lessons

From Keith’s fall on the Wizard to Rick’s deception and Jake’s risky gamble, this episode of Deadliest Catch delivered everything fans love: raw danger, high emotion, and the relentless pursuit of fortune.

As the winter crab season unfolds, the captains face not only the fury of the Bering Sea — but also the weight of their choices, their pride, and their own breaking points.
