Jeremy Clarkson has emerged victorious in his latest planning battle with the West Oxfordshire District Council for his Cotswolds-based pub, The Farmer’s Dog. The 65-year-old former Top Gear and Grand Tour host secured planning permission for hard surfacing in both of the pub’s car parks, including the western car park, as part of his ongoing efforts to enhance the site.

Clarkson purchased The Farmer’s Dog in the summer of 2024 for £1 million. The venture, which has been featured on his hit show Clarkson’s Farm, has faced its fair share of challenges, most notably the seemingly stressful pub opening covered during the August Bank Holiday.

A Year-Long Decision Process for a Simple Request

Unlike his Diddly Squat Farm Shop, Clarkson’s pub has not encountered the same level of planning issues with the local authorities. The decision to grant planning permission, however, took over a year—far longer than the usual eight-week processing time for an application of such a minor scale. The application, which involves installing hard surfacing in the pub’s car parks, was granted this month, with permission for parking already in place for the 170 spaces.

West Oxfordshire Planning Officer Kelly Murray explained that the pub’s success had resulted in an “unusual” level of traffic, leading to congestion on both the A40 and within the nearby village of Asthall. Despite this, the council found it was not within their jurisdiction to prevent the impacts of the public’s interest in the establishment. Murray stated, “Given, however, the established lawful use of the venue as a pub and restaurant, it is not within the scope of the local planning authority’s powers to prevent impacts arising from the unusual level of public interest specific to this establishment.”

Since the success of the fourth series of Clarkson’s Farm, Clarkson’s pub has become a significant draw for thousands of visitors from across the world, contributing to a rise in traffic around the area. This influx of visitors has led to the need for increased parking facilities to avoid parking on the side of the A40 or the road leading to Asthall, which could pose risks to pedestrian safety and increase traffic congestion.

Ms. Murray highlighted the potential dangers of insufficient parking, stating that the situation would mirror the issues seen at Clarkson’s Diddly Squat Farm, where increased visitor numbers have caused significant damage to roadside verges. She emphasized that providing adequate off-road parking at The Farmer’s Dog would mitigate these risks and prevent similar damage to the rural character of the area.

Public Interest Outweighs the Harm

In her conclusion, the planning officer noted that the public interest in granting permission for the expansion outweighed the “slight harm” caused by the modest increase in the pub’s size. The approval of the plans ensures that Clarkson’s thriving business can continue to meet the demands of its growing customer base.
