Jeremy Clarkson Fires Back at Backlash Over Labour MPs Pub Ban

Jeremy Clarkson has once again stirred controversy, this time with his response to backlash regarding his decision to ban all Labour MPs from his Oxfordshire pub, The Farmer’s Dog. In a blunt statement on X (formerly Twitter), the Clarkson’s Farm star made it clear that his move was a stance in support of British farmers and a response to what he perceives as the Labour Party’s detrimental policies toward the farming community.

Clarkson’s pub ban initially targeted Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer but has now been extended to include all 404 Labour MPs. The only exception is Markus Campbell-Savours, MP for Penrith and Solway, who was against his party’s inheritance tax changes that would affect family farms. Campbell-Savours was the only Labour MP to vote against these proposed changes, which were seen as harmful to elderly farmers and their families, a stance that Clarkson apparently respects.

On X, Clarkson clarified his position, stating, “To be clear, I have banned all Labour MPs from my pub, except one: Markus Campbell-Savours. He’s welcome any time.” His post sparked a flurry of responses, with some fans applauding the move, while others criticized it, saying that politics and business should remain separate. One critic wrote, “Beer is beer, and politics is politics. Keep them separate.” Clarkson responded in typical fashion, saying, “Said no-one who’s been in a pub, ever.”

Many of Clarkson’s supporters rallied behind him, with one writing, “Fair,” and another joking, “You could let them in but charge £50 a pint — cos inflation?” His supporters were quick to defend the decision, pointing out that pubs have always been a place for heated political discussion. One fan remarked, “Two conversations guaranteed to kick off in a pub — politics or religion.”

Clarkson’s stance forms part of a larger protest against rising business rates and the government’s budget, which many pub owners, including Clarkson, argue is putting undue strain on the hospitality sector. The outspoken host has long been critical of Labour, particularly their agricultural policies, and has made his frustration with the party known on several occasions.

In 2024, ahead of the General Election, Clarkson wrote that he would “rather vote for my dog than Sir Starmer’s merry bunch of ideological nincompoops,” criticizing Labour’s stance on agriculture. Clarkson has been vocal in his opposition to proposed changes to agricultural property relief, which he believes would force family farms to sell land to cover rising costs. He joined thousands of farmers at a rally in Westminster in November 2024, urging the government to “back down.”

Clarkson has also taken practical steps to support British produce at his pub. He removed items like Coca-Cola and avocados from the menu, opting instead for locally sourced food and drink, including his own Hawkstone beer. His efforts to promote British agriculture have been widely supported by farming groups, and his role in raising awareness about the struggles facing farmers has increased pressure on policymakers to address these issues.

Despite the backlash, Clarkson remains steadfast in his beliefs, arguing that the Labour Party has done little to support farmers. His outspoken nature has only fueled the ongoing debate about the future of farming in the UK and the role of politicians in shaping its future.
