Jeremy Clarkson Feared Clarkson’s Farm Would Be ‘Boring’ — What Happened Next Everyone
Jeremy Clarkson Admits He Feared Clarkson’s Farm Would Be “Boring”
Jeremy Clarkson’s wildly popular Prime Video series Clarkson’s Farm may now be a global sensation, but according to his longtime producer Andy Wilman, the former Top Gear star initially believed the show would flop. Speaking on The Chris Moyles Show on Radio X, Wilman revealed that Clarkson had serious doubts long before the cameras rolled.
A Surprising Hit No One Expected
For the last four years, viewers have followed Clarkson’s chaotic — and often hilarious — attempt to run Diddly Squat Farm in the Cotswolds. The show quickly became one of Prime Video’s top-performing series when it debuted in 2021, thanks to its blend of comedy, authenticity, and a cast of unexpected fan favorites.
Kaleb Cooper, Charlie Ireland, Gerald Cooper, Harriet Cowan, and Lisa Hogan have all become beloved figures, turning Clarkson’s farming misadventure into must-watch TV. Yet behind the scenes, no one anticipated this level of success.
Wilman: “Jeremy Never Thought He’d Have Another Hit”
Andy Wilman admitted the series was never planned to be a blockbuster. In fact, Clarkson doubted anyone would be interested.
“That was absolutely out of the blue,” Wilman said. “Jeremy never thought he was going to have another hit. We were done.”
The success was so unexpected that even Amazon executives were skeptical when Clarkson first pitched the idea.
Amazon Wanted Him Talked Out of It
After leaving the BBC’s Top Gear, Clarkson, Wilman, and the team signed a contract with Amazon that required additional content outside of The Grand Tour. That led to solo projects — including Clarkson’s farming idea.
But not everyone was convinced.
Wilman recalled:
“If I had a quid for every exec who rang me and went, ‘Can you talk him out of that?’”
Clarkson himself wasn’t confident either. He reportedly warned Wilman that a farming show might be “the most boring thing” they’d ever produce.
The Cast Changed Everything
Clarkson’s biggest fear turned out to be his biggest mistake.
The quirky, unpolished, and utterly genuine personalities working on the farm transformed the show.
“We didn’t see that cast coming,” Wilman admitted.
Kaleb’s unfiltered opinions, Gerald’s incomprehensible charm, Charlie’s expertise, and Lisa’s steady presence gave the show its heart — and made audiences fall in love with the Diddly Squat crew.
Kaleb Cooper’s Rise: From Farmhand to Global Personality
The success of Clarkson’s Farm has even launched Kaleb Cooper into his own stardom.
He is currently filming a brand-new four-part series for Prime Video — this time in Australia.
Kaleb said of his upcoming project:
“I spend most of my time with the most travelled man in the world, so I got brave and booked my first ever flight… Australia, here I come!”
His goal? To test whether his contracting business could go international.
A Show That Almost Didn’t Happen
In the end, the show Clarkson feared would be “boring” became one of Prime Video’s most successful programs.
It revitalized British farming on television, turned everyday farm workers into celebrities, and proved that authenticity — and a bit of chaos — can still capture the world’s attention.
Clarkson may have doubted the idea, but millions of fans are now grateful he didn’t talk himself out of it.
