Jeremy Clarkson Admits “Problem” with His Car After Girlfriend’s Complaint
Driving Woes on the A40 in Oxfordshire
Jeremy Clarkson has opened up about a driving “problem” he experienced while on the A40 in Oxfordshire, which resulted in a complaint from his girlfriend, Lisa Hogan. The incident occurred as Clarkson was testing a new Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio, a sporty Italian saloon, while out on the roads with Hogan, who frequently appears on Clarkson’s Farm series.
In his column for The Sunday Times, Clarkson detailed the discomfort caused by the car’s firm suspension, which led to a conversation between him and Hogan.
“Falling Down Stairs is More Comfortable”
Clarkson shared that the suspension was so unforgiving that his girlfriend asked him to slow down to 50mph to make the ride more bearable. He humorously described the experience by saying, “Falling down a flight of stairs would be more comfy.” The complaint highlights how even the thrill of testing a high-performance vehicle like the Alfa Romeo can sometimes be at odds with comfort, especially on roads like the A40.

ADAS and the New Car Laws
The exchange between Clarkson and Hogan also brought up a point about the advanced driver assistance system (ADAS), which is now a legal requirement in the UK and EU for all new cars. ADAS helps prevent accidents by automatically applying the brakes if a collision is imminent and monitoring driving behavior. Clarkson, however, noted that despite the presence of ADAS, the car’s firm suspension remained an issue that even modern technology couldn’t resolve.
