Fans Fear for Sig Hansen’s Life After Season 21 Finale Emergency

‘Deadliest Catch’ Fans Urge Sig Hansen to Retire After Scary Onboard Medical Emergency

Deadliest Catch fans are voicing concern for longtime star Sig Hansen after the 59-year-old captain suffered a frightening medical emergency during the Season 21 finale on Friday, October 21.

A Collapse at Sea

The episode saw Hansen suddenly collapse aboard his vessel, the Northwestern, before being rushed to the hospital. The incident came after the veteran fisherman admitted to being awake for over 36 hours, consuming 15 to 20 cups of coffee, and continuing to smoke, despite years of heart issues.

During his medical evaluation, Hansen’s doctor issued a serious warning — advising him to quit smoking, cut back on caffeine, and consider stepping away from life at sea altogether.

“You’re not doing yourself any favors being on the boat,” the doctor cautioned.

Fans Agree: “Time to Slow Down”

Following the emotional finale, fans flooded social media with messages urging Hansen to put his health and family first.

“After watching the last episode, I thought the same as what his doctor said — time to slow down, wrap it up, and enjoy the grandkids,” one Reddit user wrote.

Another added,

“He’s choosing fishing over his family. Smoking, 20 cups of coffee, long hours, heart damage — he’s setting himself up for disaster. He has a great chance of dying at sea.”

Fans also reflected on the loss of Phil Harris, the Deadliest Catch legend who died of a stroke in 2010, warning that Sig could be headed down a similar path.

“It’s a rough life. Stress on top of exhaustion is what killed Phil,” one viewer noted.

A Captain Who Won’t Quit

Despite growing concern, many fans believe Hansen won’t voluntarily step down.

“He’s a workaholic,” one fan commented.
“He’s not going to stop unless someone makes him.”

Others offered compromises — suggesting that Hansen share captain duties or limit his hours at sea to protect his health.

Still, not everyone agreed he should retire. One commenter wrote,

“A guy like him is going to die doing what he loves. Honestly, there’s nothing wrong with that.”

Another replied,

“Maybe not for his wife or daughters — they’re the ones who’ll be left behind.”

A History of Health Scares

This isn’t the first time the Deadliest Catch star has faced a medical crisis. In 2016, Hansen suffered a massive heart attack while filming the show and had to be airlifted to a hospital in Anchorage.

He later told Yahoo! that he was in denial about what was happening.

“I wanted to keep fishing, but the tests showed I was having a full-blown heart attack.”

Just a year later, Hansen suffered another minor heart attack, this time triggered by an allergic reaction to antibiotics. Following that scare, he told TV Insider he quit smoking, saying he was “embarrassed and ashamed” of himself.

However, as the Season 21 finale revealed, those habits have since crept back into his daily routine.

Family First

Hansen has been married to June Hansen for over two decades. The couple share two adopted daughters, Mandy and Nina, while Sig also has an older daughter, Melissa Eckstrom, from his first marriage.

Fans have often praised his relationship with Mandy, who has followed in his footsteps to become a deckhand and rising star on the Northwestern. But after this latest health crisis, viewers worry about how long she’ll have her father by her side.

“I feel sorry for his wife,” one fan shared.
“It’s like being married to a cop — every time he leaves, you wonder if he’s coming home.”

What’s Next for the Captain?

As of now, Discovery Channel has not confirmed whether Hansen will continue filming for future seasons. His fans, however, are hoping he’ll listen to his doctors — and his loved ones — before it’s too late.

“Sig Hansen is one of the toughest captains in TV history,” one longtime fan wrote, “but maybe it’s time he proves his strength by knowing when to stop.”
