‘Deadliest Catch’: Keith Colburn Suffers Fall That Could Jeopardize Winter Season
‘Deadliest Catch’: Keith Colburn’s Painful Fall Threatens His Winter Season
A High-Stakes Return to Dutch Harbor
The October 10 episode of Deadliest Catch opened on a note of anticipation — and danger — as the Bering Sea’s opilio crab (snow crab) fishery reopened for the first time in three years. With $51 million in potential earnings on the line, the captains were more determined than ever to make up for lost time.
For Wizard skipper Keith Colburn, the pressure was immense. He had a 175,000-pound quota to meet, a motivated crew, and only a narrow weather window to get started.

But even before the first pots hit the water, problems started piling up.
Monte’s Absence and Keith’s Family Struggles
Keith’s brother Monte Colburn was missing in action from the wheelhouse, leaving deckhand “OJ” Pascual Ganuelas to report that Monte had been on a drinking bender and wasn’t feeling well.
The news hit Keith hard. He’s spoken openly about his family’s history with alcoholism, and Monte’s relapse added another emotional layer to an already brutal start.
To make matters worse, a low-pressure storm system was barreling toward their position. The Wizard crew had to hustle to drop pots before the seas turned deadly.
As the winds rose and waves slammed the deck, one crew member suffered a shoulder and arm injury, while Monte slowly recovered and took over in the wheelhouse — just as another crisis struck.
Keith’s Dangerous Fall
While navigating the cramped galley, Keith slipped and fell near the refrigerator, injuring his back. Monte later discovered that Keith’s side had turned purple, raising fears of a possible kidney or internal injury.
Keith attempted to ice his back, but Monte grew increasingly worried as they were miles from Dutch Harbor with a storm closing in.
“We might have to call for a medevac,” Monte warned.
The scene left viewers holding their breath — would Keith’s injury force him to abandon the Wizard and risk losing his season?
Sig Hansen and Rick Shelford: A Game of Deception
Meanwhile, Sig Hansen of the Northwestern met up with Rick Shelford aboard the Aleutian Lady to discuss their winter game plan. Rick had recently acquired the Bountiful, a vessel captained by Bobby, which was fishing for cod but also gathering intel for opilio crab hotspots.

Rick suggested they divide the grounds — Sig heading east, Rick going west — but Sig soon realized he’d been played. While Sig’s pots came up nearly empty, Rick scored a massive 372 crabs per pot, signaling a rich vein of opportunity.
When Sig checked in, Rick downplayed his success:
“Nothing too great,” Rick said casually.
After confirming the truth through Bobby, Sig seethed.
“Rick was sandbagging information,” he concluded.
“Two can play that game. Let the games begin.”
The competition between the two captains was officially on.
Jake Anderson’s Risky Bet
On the Titan Explorer, Jake Anderson was going all in. He traded a portion of his opilio quota for higher-value bairdi crab, betting that the premium price per pound could help him pay off the $1.5 million he still owed on the vessel.
“This move will either make me a hero or a real big loser,” Jake admitted.
But the Bering Sea had other plans.
Caught in the same winter storm, Jake’s first pots came up light. Then disaster struck: a port solenoid burned out, crippling his steering system.
With repairs estimated to take two to three hours, Jake made a daring choice — to continue fishing using only half his steering, forcing the Titan Explorer to run in circles amid 20-foot waves.
The decision kept the gear moving but put his crew in serious danger as they fought to keep balance on the slippery, heaving deck.
A Brutal Start to a New Season
Between Keith’s injury, Monte’s relapse, Rick’s deception, and Jake’s mechanical chaos, the winter opener of Deadliest Catch was one of the most intense in years.
With millions at stake and the Bering Sea showing no mercy, each captain is fighting not only the elements — but their own breaking points.
