Disaster in Alaska: Dustin Hurt’s Crew Battles a Collapsed Camp in Gold Rush: White Water
Gold Rush: White Water — Disaster Strikes at Nugget Creek
A Frozen Start to the Season
As the new mining season begins in Alaska, Dustin and his crew arrive at Nugget Creek Camp ready to get a head start.
Last year, they left all their gear behind — safely packed inside a steel-reinforced storage tent, built to withstand the harsh Alaskan winter.

But when they return… everything has vanished beneath thick layers of snow and ice.
“Everything is under snow — our tent, our buggies, the dredges. It’s all buried,” Dustin says in disbelief.
The so-called snowproof tent has collapsed under the heavy winter load, setting the team back before they can even start.
The Rescue Mission Begins
Day one turns into a full-scale recovery operation. The crew’s goal: to find out what survived inside the crushed tent.
With freezing winds howling through the valley, Dustin and his team dig desperately through the wreckage.
“If my dredges are destroyed, we’re done,” he says. “I can’t afford to replace all this stuff.”
To make progress, Dustin fires up the bulldozer, which thankfully starts on the first try — a small but vital victory.
Total Destruction Inside the Tent
When the snow and ice finally give way, the extent of the damage becomes clear.
The team’s Jeep and ATV are crushed under the collapsed structure.
“The windshield’s gone. Tires are popped. The whole roof’s smashed in,” one crew member reports.
“Who’s going to tell Dustin?” another jokes nervously.
The mood is grim. Years of equipment — potentially ruined in one brutal Alaskan winter.
A Small Miracle

But just when things seem hopeless, the crew gets a glimmer of good news.
After pulling the Jeep free, it miraculously starts up.
“It’s alive!” someone shouts.
“You don’t even need to tow it, man — it still runs!”
It’s battered, dented, and barely holding together — but it works.
And that’s all they need to keep going.
Checking the Dredges
The biggest relief of all comes when Dustin inspects the dredges — the heart of their gold operation.
Against all odds, they’ve survived intact.
“All the dredges are fine. I can’t believe it,” Dustin says, smiling for the first time all day.
“The one thing that didn’t get smashed — my dredges. Pure luck.”
With that win, morale begins to rise again.
Regrouping for the Next Step
Now that they’ve salvaged their key equipment, Dustin sets his sights on recovery.
The crew plans to fit snow tracks on the ATV and haul one of the dredges up to the creek by morning.
“We’ve still got work to do,” Dustin says. “Let’s fix the cabins tonight — tomorrow, we move that dredge.”
Even after the worst setback imaginable, the Nugget Creek team isn’t giving up.
They’ve survived the storm, and their gear — battered but functional — means they still have a fighting chance.
A Season Built on Grit
From the very first day, Dustin and his crew are reminded of a brutal truth:
In Alaska, every ounce of gold must be fought for — sometimes against nature itself.
But if there’s one thing this team knows, it’s how to dig through disaster and keep moving forward.
