Gold Rush Star Rick Ness Faces His Biggest Challenge Yet in Season 16

Rick Ness: The Comeback King of Gold Rush Returns for Season 16

From Crewman to Mine Boss

Hey, Gold Rush fans — welcome back!
Today, we’re talking about one of the show’s most inspiring figures: Rick Ness. From personal heartbreak to hard-earned success, Rick’s story has been one of resilience, determination, and redemption.

Meet Rick Ness: 4 Things to Know About Gold Rush Star | The Direct

Rick first joined Gold Rush in Season 3, working as part of Parker Schnabel’s crew. His grit, reliability, and quiet leadership quickly earned him a loyal fan base. By Season 9, Rick made the bold decision to strike out on his own, launching his own mining operation — a risky move that would test his limits both financially and mentally.

Battling Adversity and Heartbreak

Rick’s independent mining journey wasn’t smooth. He faced mechanical breakdowns, shifting crews, and the constant stress of chasing enough gold to stay afloat.

Off-screen, life dealt him even tougher blows. In 2019, Rick lost his beloved mother, Judy Ness, to brain cancer. She had always been his biggest supporter — the one who proudly followed his rise on Gold Rush.

After her passing, Rick adopted her dog, Ruby, who became his emotional rock and a living reminder of his mom’s love. When Ruby passed away in 2024 at the remarkable age of 19, Rick described it as losing “the last piece of my mom.”

Stepping Back to Move Forward

In 2022, Rick took a much-needed break from mining to focus on his mental health — an honest and courageous move that won him even more respect from fans.
When he returned for Season 15, he was more determined than ever to rebuild his life and career.

The Season 15 Redemption Arc

Season 15 became Rick’s defining moment.
He took a massive gamble, investing every dollar from Rally Valley into a new, high-risk claim at Vegas Valley. The conditions were brutal — freezing temperatures, constant equipment failures, and costly breakdowns.

At one point, a snapped shaker belt and leaking water line nearly shut his entire operation down. Many doubted he’d even finish the season.

But Rick refused to quit.

At the final weigh-in, he shocked everyone. His first tally came in at 110.79 ounces of gold. Then, in true Rick Ness fashion, he revealed two hidden canisters — adding another 300 ounces.

Total: 410 ounces, worth over $1.1 million.

And the best part? With just seven crew members, Rick and his team pulled in a staggering $4.5 million for the season. Rick personally gave each crew member a 25-ounce gold bonus (around $50,000 each) to thank them for their hard work and loyalty.
