The Haunted Secrets of Spike Island: A Paranormal Investigation

A Fortress with a Dark History

Spike Island, off the coast of Ireland, is a place steeped in shadows. Over the centuries, it has been both a military fort and a brutal prison, switching roles back and forth. During the famine years, it held over 700 convicts—far more than it was built for—forcing them into 14-hour days of grueling labor. Accounts of flogging, isolation, and cruelty left behind an aura of suffering that still lingers within its stone walls.

Ghostly Legends and the Gaunt Gunner

With so much pain embedded in its history, paranormal reports were inevitable. The earliest written account dates back to the 1940s, when an Irish soldier on duty claimed to see a figure in outdated military garb with hollow, socket-like eyes. Terrified, he fired his rifle at the apparition. This spirit became known as the Gaunt Gunner, and his presence is still reported in the island’s central square.

Paranormal Hotspots: A Block and the Punishment Cells

Investigators often focus on A Block, originally built to house 300 soldiers but later crammed with double that number of convicts. Visitors frequently report faces in windows, flickering shadows, and ghostly footsteps.
Another notorious site is the Punishment Block, where prisoners were confined in total darkness for weeks. Strange smells, shadowy figures, and phantom footsteps are common. One chilling photo even appears to show human legs on the staircase—proof, some say, of lingering spirits.

A Night Alone on the Island

When the last ferry departed, the investigators were left as the island’s only residents. Armed with cameras and paranormal equipment, they split up to explore. In A Block, reports of faces in the windows matched the eerie atmosphere of the abandoned ruin. In the Punishment Block, however, activity spiked. Using an SLS camera, one investigator captured figures seemingly pushing against the walls and curling into a fetal position—spirits still imprisoned in their cells.

Into the Darkness: Heather’s Isolation Test

Determined to connect more deeply, Heather recreated the conditions of an inmate by locking herself inside a punishment cell, hooded and alone. With only an audio recorder and EMF devices, she called out for responses. Taps echoed from the walls. The equipment activated as if answering her questions. Then, she heard distinct footsteps enter the cell. Shaken, she ended the session—convinced she had shared the space with something unseen.

The Face in the Plexiglass

Later, while photographing the abandoned cells, a strange anomaly appeared. Reflections in the dirty plexiglass revealed more than just the investigators’ faces. A third face, pale with dark hollow eyes, stared back at them. It resembled the Gaunt Gunner himself. The discovery reinforced the belief that Spike Island is far from empty.

The Spirit Board in Cell B9

In one of the island’s most infamous cells—B9, where prisoners once tried contacting spirits—the team attempted a controlled spirit board session. Almost immediately, the planchette began to move. The board spelled out HELL and then RUN, echoing chilling reports that inmates once believed they had summoned something demonic within those walls.

The Curse of Spike Island

Whether it was imagination, suggestion, or genuine spirit contact, the night on Spike Island left the investigators convinced the prison’s past is not at rest. From the ghostly guard William Ready to the Gaunt Gunner and the cries of long-dead prisoners, the island continues to be one of the world’s most terrifying haunted sites.
