2 Million Gallons of Water Power Tony’s Gold Operation
As the gold mining season nears its end, legendary miner Tony Beets finds himself facing one of the biggest setbacks of the year—after accidentally flooding his mega cut while trying to extract the last bit of pay dirt. But in true Beets fashion, what starts as a disaster ends with a golden recovery.

One Scoop Too Far – Mega Cut Floods
While digging the final section of his massive “Mega Cut,” Tony Beets pushed a little too hard. Trying to grab just two more buckets of pay, Tony’s crew accidentally breached the wall separating the cut from a massive 2-million-gallon tailings pond.
“You’ve got to be kidding me,” someone exclaims, as water gushes uncontrollably into the pit.
“I guess that’s what happens when you get a little greedy.”
With the mega cut now flooded and rendered useless, the crew scrambles to figure out their next move.
“Well, I guess that’s the end of the season,” one team member jokes grimly.
“If we don’t get new ground open, we’re not getting paid.”
New Ground, New Problems
Determined not to lose momentum, Tony moves his operation to a new site—the Upper Cut—hoping to salvage the rest of the season. But things quickly go wrong again.
Kevin Beets attempts to haul a stuck rock truck out of a sinkhole. In doing so, the entire truck body breaks in half—a rare and costly failure.
“I’ve never seen a rock truck pull apart like that,” says Tony.
“It literally stretched four feet longer before the front dropped.”
To recover the broken machine, welder Cody Hunter quickly fabricates a towing point. Using the D6 dozer, the crew successfully retrieves the truck cab. After six hours of repair and recovery, the team is finally back to work—stripping the new cut.
A Lesson in Greed and Recovery
Reflecting on the mega cut flood, Tony admits the mistake.
“We got a little greedy on the wall… Water came through the coarse tailings and flooded the whole thing.”
But the crew remains hopeful. With the Upper Cut now active, they weigh the gold to see if the risk paid off.
Gold Weigh-In: A Massive Comeback
Mike tallies the results:
“10, 20, 30… 100… 200… 278.12 ounces.”
That’s over half a million dollars in gold—enough to ease the pain of the earlier flood and broken truck.
“Maybe we can use that to pay for the rock truck I pulled in half,” Tony jokes.
Season Nears Goal Despite Setbacks
With this new cleanout, Tony Beets’s season total climbs to nearly 2,600 ounces, worth around $4.7 million. He’s just 400 ounces short of his season goal.
“I think that’ll carry us through. Maybe even get us to 3,000 ounces,” Tony concludes.
“Now get out there and do it!”
