Gone but Never Forgotten: 10 Lost Souls from the World of Crab Fishing
Remembering the Fallen: A Tribute to the Cast Members of Deadliest Catch
Since its debut in 2005, Discovery Channel’s Deadliest Catch has captivated viewers with its raw, intense depiction of life at sea. The show chronicles the lives of crab fishermen as they brave the treacherous waters of the Bering Sea in pursuit of Alaskan king and snow crab. While audiences have come to admire the bravery, resilience, and camaraderie of the crew members, the series has also brought to light the dangers and tragedies that come with the profession. Over the years, Deadliest Catch has sadly lost several beloved cast members—each leaving behind a lasting legacy.

Captain Phil Harris – F/V Cornelia Marie
One of the most iconic and beloved figures on Deadliest Catch, Captain Phil Harris was the heart and soul of the F/V Cornelia Marie. Known for his passion for fishing and his larger-than-life personality, Phil had been part of the fishing world since childhood. He passed away in February 2010 at the age of 53, after suffering a massive stroke aboard his vessel. Despite early signs of recovery, Phil succumbed to complications, leaving a deep void in the Deadliest Catch community. His son, Josh Harris, would later honor his legacy by taking over as captain of the Cornelia Marie.
Captain Tony Lara – F/V Cornelia Marie
Following Phil’s passing, Captain Tony Lara stepped in to lead the Cornelia Marie. Though his time on the show was brief, he played a pivotal role in helping the crew adjust during a difficult transition. Tony passed away unexpectedly from a heart attack in his sleep on August 9, 2015, while attending a motorcycle rally in Sturgis, South Dakota.
Blake Painter – F/V Maverick
Blake Painter, a former captain of the F/V Maverick, appeared in Seasons 2 and 3. Despite leaving the series early, Blake left a strong impression on fans. He was found dead in his home in Astoria, Oregon, in May 2018 at the age of 38. A toxicology report was ordered, but the exact cause of death was not made public.
Nick McGlashan – F/V Summer Bay
A fan favorite and a dedicated fisherman, Nick McGlashan worked as a deckhand and later as deck boss on F/V Summer Bay. He appeared on Deadliest Catch from Seasons 9 through 17. Nick openly discussed his struggles with addiction, which made his sudden death on December 27, 2020, at age 33 all the more heartbreaking. While the cause of death was not officially revealed, many suspect it was related to substance abuse.
Nick Mavar – F/V Northwestern
Veteran deckhand Nick Mavar was a mainstay on Deadliest Catch, appearing in Seasons 1 through 17 aboard the F/V Northwestern. After leaving the show due to a medical emergency, Nick continued working in the industry. He passed away from a heart attack on June 13, 2024, at age 59 while working aboard another vessel in Alaska.
Justin Tennison – F/V Time Bandit
Engineer Justin Tennison had just started his career on Deadliest Catch during Season 7 when he passed away on January 22, 2011, shortly after returning from sea. He was found in a hotel room in Homer, Alaska. The official cause of death was sleep apnea, though marijuana and alcohol were reportedly found in the room.
Mahlon Reyes – F/V Cape Caution & F/V Summer Bay
Mahlon Reyes worked as a deckhand from 2012 to 2020. He appeared on several vessels throughout his time on the show, with his last appearance in Season 16. He passed away on July 27, 2020, at age 38 due to an accidental drug overdose. He left behind a wife and three children.
Todd Kochutin – F/V Patricia Lee
One of the most tragic incidents in recent seasons, Todd Kochutin died on February 26, 2021, at age 30 after being crushed by a crab pot while working aboard the F/V Patricia Lee. His injuries were severe, and despite being airlifted to a hospital in Anchorage, he did not survive. His death was covered in a Season 18 episode titled Crushed at Sea.
Ross Jones – F/V Saga
Little is known about Ross Jones, a greenhorn on the F/V Saga, but his death was confirmed by the Deadliest Catch fan community in June 2022. Though details are scarce, it’s known that Ross left behind a girlfriend and child.
Tom Brousard – F/V Saga
