$100,000 in 4 Days: How Tony Beets Recovered After Dredge Failure

Gold Rush Season 15: Tony Beets Faces Dredge Disaster and a Major Comeback

After a season packed with highs and lows, Tony Beets and his crew faced yet another brutal challenge: disaster struck the old dredge operation.

Gold Rush Season 15, Episode 23 recap: Tony Beets celebrates record season as son Kevin proves himself

Disaster on the Dredge

Working alongside longtime Beets miner Len Hora, trouble quickly unfolded when the 34-ton bucket line on Tony’s dredge came loose.
The massive chain of buckets had gotten caught on a buried boulder, wrenching it off the ladder system and grinding operations to a sudden halt.

Without the bucket line in place, the dredge couldn’t process gold-bearing material — and that meant zero gold.

Tony Beets (on the radio):
“We’ve been through this before. We’ll get it on — we always do.”

First Attempt: Manual Recovery

Tony’s initial plan was to use a 349 excavator to lift and reposition the bucket line, treating it like an oversized bicycle chain.
But the situation proved trickier than expected.
Despite careful maneuvering, the bucket line remained jammed, leading to rising frustration.

Tony (after several failed tries):
“I’d rather come up with something a little more intelligent than what we’re doing. Shut everything down — we’re done for today.”

Every hour lost was another blow to Tony’s ambitious season goal of 2,500 ounces.

Second Plan: Heavy Machinery Coordination

Not one to back down, Tony devised a new strategy:

  • Step 1: Wrap a winch cable and anchor chain around the bucket line.
  • Step 2: Use a D6 dozer (driven by mechanic Brandon Carr) to pull the slack tight.
  • Step 3: Simultaneously lift the chain upward with the 349 excavator (operated by Evan Kale).
  • Step 4: Guide and reposition the ladder from the wheelhouse (handled by Greg).

It was a game of inches, requiring perfect coordination between three massive machines.

With careful teamwork — and a lot of shouting from Tony — the crew finally succeeded.
The bucket line was lifted and dropped back into place, restoring the dredge to working order.

Tony (grinning):
“Nice job.”

Back in Business: Dredge Pays Off

With the dredge operational again, it wasn’t long before results started rolling in.

The team managed to process enough material to recover 46.7 ounces of gold — worth nearly $100,000 — in just four days.

This brought Tony’s season gold total up to a staggering 2,403 ounces.

Tony (reflecting):
“The old girl still produces — absolutely.”

The crisis had been averted, the dredge was running strong, and the Beets family was back on track to finish the season on a high note.
