Rick Ness: “You’re Fired”! | GOLD RUSH SEASON 15
Racing Against Time: Rick Ness and His Crew’s Final Push for Gold

The Race to Pay Dirt
Rick Ness and his crew are battling against time to reach the rich gold pay layer buried deep in Vegas Valley. With the season nearing its end, every hour counts. The team is pushing their limits, moving thousands of tons of overburden daily. However, as the workload intensifies, tensions rise—especially between Rick and his foreman, Buzz Legault.
This season is a do-or-die moment for Rick. He has reinvested every dollar of the crew’s profits back into the operation, leaving no safety net. The team must reach pay dirt fast if they want any chance of a financial return. Earlier in the season, a $900,000 gold haul from Rally Valley gave them hope, but now, in Vegas Valley, they face an even greater challenge: reaching gold deposits buried 210 feet below the surface.
At nearly 100 feet down, they have just passed the halfway mark. But the deeper they dig, the more grueling the process becomes.
Adding a Fourth Rock Truck: A Necessary Gamble
To speed up progress, Rick makes a crucial decision—adding a fourth rock truck. This move increases their dirt-hauling capacity by an additional 3,600 tons per day, potentially shaving weeks off their digging time. However, it also means shifting crew members into new roles, which sparks controversy.
Buzz Legault, a highly experienced excavator operator, is reassigned to drive a rock truck—something he does not take lightly. For someone of his skill level, it feels like a demotion. Yet, in a small crew like Rick’s, everyone must take on multiple roles to keep the operation running.
“Buzz isn’t happy about being in a rock truck, but if we’re going to make this work, everyone has to step up and do what’s necessary,” Rick explains.

Tensions Rise: Buzz’s Growing Frustration
Buzz’s frustration is clear. Though he doesn’t voice his anger outright, his body language and complaints about the rough, uneven haul road make his dissatisfaction evident. At one point, he radios in, frustrated that the constant shaking of the truck is triggering his phone’s emergency detection system.
In response, Rick assigns him to reinforce the haul road with an excavator. Buzz reluctantly follows orders, spreading coarse rock to stabilize the surface. However, his resentment doesn’t fade.
“Last season, my position was clear. I was handling key operations. Somehow, this season, that’s been forgotten,” Buzz vents.
A Boiling Point: The Sleeping Incident
As the day progresses, the crew notices something unusual—Buzz is missing.
“Has anyone seen Buzz?” Rick asks over the radio.
After a search, they find him asleep inside a machine. This isn’t the first time. Last season, the crew overlooked Buzz’s midday naps because he started work as early as 4:30 a.m. But this time is different—he’s not putting in extra hours, and his decision to sleep while the rest of the crew struggles to keep up is fueling resentment.
Rick, already at his breaking point, confronts Buzz over the radio.
“For the love of—just stop sleeping! Everyone else is exhausted too, but they’re in their machines working their asses off. Meanwhile, you’re sleeping right in front of everyone. What kind of message does that send?”
After a long pause, Buzz finally responds, his voice quiet but firm.
“I’m just done caring. I’ll do what I have to, but when this season ends, I’m walking away. Buzz out.”
Clearing the Air: Rick Confronts Buzz
Buzz’s words hang in the air, leaving the crew uneasy. Rick exhales sharply—this was not the conversation he wanted, but it needed to happen.
Later, in private, Rick approaches Buzz to clear the air. He acknowledges the pressure they are all under and tries to help Buzz see the bigger picture.
“I need you, man. These guys need your help. We have a small crew, and we have to stay tight if we want to make this season a success.”
Buzz looks away before nodding.
“Yeah, I get it. We just need to communicate better.”
Rick sighs. “No communication? I’m not getting up at 4:00 a.m. just to have a meeting with you. And if you think I’m sending you flowers, forget it. But if we’re on the same page, let’s get back to work.”
Despite the tension, there’s a mutual understanding. They don’t have to like the situation, but they have to get through it together. The stakes are too high for personal conflicts to derail the mission.
Pushing Forward: The Team’s Final Effort
With the confrontation settled for now, the crew gets back to work. The fourth rock truck is running, the road is reinforced, and dirt continues to move at a relentless pace. But the season is far from over, and cracks in morale are becoming more visible.
Rick knows that beyond equipment and strategy, the true key to success is teamwork. If the crew falls apart, no amount of gold will be enough to salvage the season.
As the final days approach, one question remains: Can Rick and his team hold it together long enough to strike pay dirt before time runs out?
