Kevin’s Mining Operation Hits a Critical Obstacle

An Unyielding Struggle

Kevin Beets’ first season as an independent mine boss has been anything but easy. Now, he’s facing a crisis that could bring everything to a standstill. His wash plant is chewing through pay dirt faster than anticipated, and with his stockpile running low, he must access new ground immediately. But there’s a major problem—water is flooding the cut, turning it into an impassable swamp, and he lacks the necessary equipment to fix it.

Escalating Tensions

For over a week, Brennan Ralt has been urging Kevin to secure another pump to deal with the flooding. However, with no spare pumps, no outside assistance, and no budget for additional equipment, Kevin is at a dead end. Running on minimal sleep and shouldering the immense responsibility of a 24/7 mining operation, he refuses to back down. His goal of extracting 1,000 ounces of gold depends on keeping the mine running at full speed.

The Crisis Deepens

The team is racing against time, stripping overburden to expose fresh pay dirt in the expanded section of Lynx Cut. But as conditions deteriorate, the standing water makes maneuvering heavy equipment nearly impossible. When Kevin calls Brennan over the radio, his frustration is evident. His machine is stuck in the flooded cut, and they need a solution now.

Brennan makes an effort to free the equipment, but the underlying issue remains unresolved. Water from the wash plant’s settling pond is leaking into the cut, exacerbating the situation. Without another pump, their only option is to shut down the wash plant—an unthinkable move that would grind operations to a halt.

Reaching the Breaking Point

Already on edge, Brennan’s patience finally snaps. He reminds Kevin that he has been requesting an additional pump for a week, and now the problem has spiraled out of control. When Brennan suggests reaching out to Tony Beets for help, Kevin immediately shuts him down. He has already borrowed equipment from his parents and refuses to go back for more favors.

Frustrated, Brennan demands an alternative. Kevin hesitates before admitting the harsh truth—they simply don’t have the funds to purchase another pump. This response does nothing to alleviate Brennan’s anger. With no pump, they are rapidly running out of options, and their entire season hangs in the balance. Instead of continuing the argument, Brennan walks away, leaving Kevin to wrestle with his predicament alone.

A Desperate Gamble

Unknown to Kevin, Brennan hasn’t abandoned the operation. Unwilling to watch the mining season slip away due to inaction, he takes matters into his own hands. Contacting a mining associate upstream, Brennan negotiates a deal and spends $1,000 of his own money to purchase a pump. It’s a hefty price for someone who isn’t even in charge, but he knows the entire crew is depending on a solution. The pump comes with 800 feet of lay-flat hose—just enough to properly drain the cut and get the mine back on track.

“For me, this wasn’t just about solving a problem—it was about making sure we had a future,” Brennan later explains. “If the flooding continued, none of us would get paid.”
