Television explorer Josh Gates, best known as the host of Expedition Unknown, has revealed he is stranded in western Mexico amid a rapidly escalating security emergency compounded by severe weather.
In a series of late-night social media posts, Gates described being caught in what he called a “perfect storm” — a combination of cartel-related unrest and an approaching tropical system that has disrupted travel across the state of Jalisco.
Airports Suspended as Violence Escalates
The situation intensified after Mexican authorities arrested a high-ranking cartel figure earlier this week. In response, coordinated “narco-blockades” reportedly spread across major highways in Guadalajara and the resort city of Puerto Vallarta.
According to local reports, vehicles including buses and cargo trucks were hijacked and used to obstruct access roads, including routes leading to Guadalajara International Airport (GDL) and Puerto Vallarta International Airport (PVR).
Authorities subsequently suspended commercial flights at both airports after reports of gunfire near airport perimeters. Travelers already inside terminals were instructed to remain in place as security forces attempted to stabilize the area.

Gates’ final update showed members of his production crew gathered inside a dimly lit airport lounge. The team had been filming in the region on a historical investigation reportedly related to lost Cristero War-era treasure. That project has now been paused indefinitely.
